Drapes are delicate, decorative and defiantly stylish in almost any room of your home. They also can get deceptively dirty. Aside from a splatter stain or sun damage, it can be hard to tell when it’s time to drop the drapes and clean them. Naturally, you let this chore go by the wayside, waiting for a weekend to free up on your calendar. Before you know it, weeks have turned into months and maybe even months into years. All the while, those reams of filthy fabric are hanging over your head – literally.

Check out this quick guide on how to clean drapery. These steps will keep your home healthy and your window treatments looking as good as new.

How to Clean Drapery for Decades of Enjoyment

You are right to assume that this isn’t the most simple project. Cleaning drapes the right way is really a three-phase process: 1) deep cleaning, 2) daily dusting and 3) maintenance.

The good news is that you don’t have to tackle it all at once. These phases are meant to be carried out at different times. Not only does this make the chore of cleaning a lot more manageable, but it actually helps your drapes maintain their shape, color, and form. 

Phase 1: Deep Cleaning

If it’s been a while since you’ve tended to your window treatments, you’ll want to start with a nice, deep cleaning. Typically, you should schedule a deep cleaning session every six months, if not once per quarter.

Step 1

Remove the drapes from their respective rods or hardware.

Step 2

Lay them out on a flat surface, such as your hardwood floor or a long kitchen island.  

Step 3

Vacuum the drapes before washing to remove any excess dust or debris. For the best results, use your vacuum’s detachable upholstery brush or dust brush and set to a reduced suction if your machine allows. You can also cover the attachment hose with a nylon sock to lessen the power of the suction.

Side note: Sheer, delicate fabrics may get caught in a vacuum cleaner. For these drapes, simply take them outside and shake.

Step 4

Wash per the manufacturer’s directions. If your curtains have lost their tags, finding a trained professional is usually a safe option. Otherwise, follow the general guidelines below for proper care based on the type of fabric you have.

• Linen-Based - At Everhem, this is the fabric we choose to use for our custom drapes. Linen drapes should never be washed or dry-cleaned. Some companies offer services for cleaning your drapes such as COIT. It is always a good idea to have the professionals step in for the deep cleaning here. Your drapes are a beautiful investment and you will want to protect that investment with proper care.
  

• Cotton - As long as your cotton drapes are free of fragile liners, they are machine-washable. 
  

• Silk - This is a very fine and finicky fabric, which means it is better suited for gentle hand washing. Use mild soap, lukewarm or cool water and hang dry. Be careful not to forcibly twist silk, or it will crinkle.  
  

• Sheer Fabric - Sheer fabrics have a tendency to discolor if you don’t clean them frequently. They are another fragile type of drapery, which requires soaking in cold water before hand-washing. Certain sheer fabrics can withstand machine washing; just be sure to use the gentle cycle. To dry, add to a machine dryer with no heat and a couple of soft terrycloth towels that serve as fabric softeners.
  

• Synthetic Fiber - When it comes to acrylic, polyester and other synthetic curtains, dry-cleaning is actually not advised. The solvents that dry cleaners use can degrade the integrity of synthetic fibers. Instead, hand-wash or machine-wash these drapes at home.  
  

• Wool and Cashmere - On the other hand, wool and cashmere must always be dry cleaned.
  

• Velvet - Though not the most common fabric for drapery, velvet or velvet-blended window coverings should be brushed instead of washed. Simply dip a chamois cloth in hot water and wring out any excess before using it to gently wipe off any dust bunnies.

Side note: If machine-washing, be careful not to overload the drum. In most cases, washing one panel at a time is your best bet. Remember that fabric weighs more when it’s wet. If there’s too much weight in the drum, it can knock your washing machine out of balance.

Step 5

Dry your drapes either on a clothesline outside or by lying flat on your floors over a layer of towels and plastic garbage bags. The towels will absorb the water, while the plastic protects your floors. Keep in mind that it can take a couple of days for your heavy drapes to dry completely.

Step 6

If you want crisp, tailored drapes, iron them while they are still a little damp. You’ll want to iron them along the vertical length on the side of the fabric that does not face out.

Step 7

Use your favorite multi-surface cleaning solution (nothing harsh) to wipe off the window treatment hardware. This includes curtain rods, finials, and brackets. 

Phase 2: Daily Cleaning

Yes, daily cleaning is necessary. The same way you wash dishes after dinner or water your plants before leaving for work, you’ll want to give some attention to your window treatments every single day. Just add these quick-and-easy steps to your regular routine, and it will soon become second nature.

Step 1

Whenever you go to close the drapes, give them a little shake. You’ll knock off unwanted dust and debris, which will make deep cleaning that much easier.

*Step 2

If Step 1 didn’t do the trick you may try spot cleaning your curtains and drapes with a damp chamois cloth. Similar to how you’d clean velvet drapery, you’ll wet the cloth in warm water, wring it out and then gently wipe from top to bottom in the areas of concern.

Side note: Depending on the type of fabric and any special instructions, you may need to use a terrycloth or paper towel instead of a chamois.

Phase 3: Maintenance 

In between those daily efforts and deep cleanings is your maintenance routine. These serve as intermittent check-ups, which you can perform on a weekly, monthly or even as-needed basis. Don’t take this phase lightly. Just like an annual physical exam or regular oil change, drapery maintenance matters.

Weekly

Bust out the vacuum cleaner once a week. You’re going to do it anyway to clean your floors and carpets. Why not run the brush-tipped wand along your drapes while you’re at it? Vacuuming your drapes on a weekly basis not only keeps them clean and sheen but can also help ease allergy symptoms.

Monthly

Unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise, you can toss your drapery in the dryer on the “no heat” setting. Run it for about five minute – just enough time to remove any dust particles. Immediately pull them out of the dryer and rehang on their rods, so as not to wrinkle.

Bi-Monthly

For machine-washable curtains and drapes, you are welcome to use a steamer. Simply use the upholstery attachment for your steamer and follow the device’s instructions.

As Needed

Adjust your cleaning methods based on the wear and tear of your drapes. If you notice they are sun damaged, make sure you switch to a hand-washing method or finding professional treatment. Or, if your cotton drapes are shrinking with each wash, this is another sign that they should be taken to the cleaners.

The smartest way to tackle any big project is to break it down into smaller, more manageable pieces. When choosing window treatments, this method makes the most sense. Go room-by-room and think about each area’s function, how often you’ll need to adjust the window treatments, how much light you want coming through, and then decide on the style you’re trying to create.

1. Identify Your Room’s Primary Function

The functionality of any given room in your house will heavily influence the type and amount of window treatments you need in that space. For instance, a home theatre will need layers of drapery for enhanced sound and diminished sunlight. Here are a few more examples:

• Kitchen – While you’re cooking a delicious meal for your family, you probably aren’t thinking about your drapes catching the scent of curry or crinkling from the sudden temperature changes. Whichever window covering you choose, it will need to be resilient.

• Bathroom – Your bathroom is the one place you want complete privacy, but you also want to let in natural light to apply makeup or pluck your eyebrows. Easy-to-adjust Roman shades or light-and-airy drapes can easily give you both functions.

• Living room – These expansive spaces tend to feature windows and doors of varying shapes and sizes. Therefore, you might want Roman shades to cover windows and a combination of shades and lightweight drapes for the sliding glass door.

• Nursery or child’s room – If you want your sleeping baby to stay snoozing, you’ll need blackout shades that keep their room dark during midday naps.

2. Find Your Style

This may be the most challenging step of all, but that’s nothing a little inspiration can’t fix. If you’re ready to refine your windows, take a look below at a few examples of how different drapes and shades complement various design styles. These ideas should spark your creative brain and, hopefully, make choosing window treatments a much simpler process.

Choosing Window Treatments for Your Style

If you’re not sure exactly where your style falls on the spectrum, use the reference points to guide you. From there, you can choose the right window coverings based on what suits you – and your home – the best.

Mediterranean Coastal

Inspired by the beautiful shorelines on the south of Greece, Italy, and Spain, you can expect Mediterranean Coastal design to be rich in history and culture. The color palettes include the aquatic blues of Greece, as well as the warm earth tones of Italy. There’s often texture on the walls and dark wood on the floors. And no matter what, there’s always a flood of natural light in every room.

You might like Mediterranean Coastal design if:

• You live near a beach or are inspired by the ocean
• You like lots of natural light
• Warm tones and heavy woods make you feel right at home
• You appreciate carved details and hand-crafted textures

Window Treatments That Match Up:

Linen drapery: Light linen drapes on your floor-to-ceiling windows lend the kind of hand-sewn charm you want on your Mediterranean Coastal walls. They’ll add a subtle layer to the already texturized stucco or plaster without taking away from the free-flowing vibes of a sun-soaked room.

Vintage Cape Cod

In fact, wainscoting and crown molding are prominent features in a Cape Cod home, as are wood-framed windows and warm lighting schemes.

Everhem had the privilege of working with The Lynden Lane Co., a family run interior design company, on a few projects. We learned first hand how carefully crafted and well designed they create their spaces, and Haley immediately recommended them to her parents since she has left her Interior Design days behind focusing fully on Everhem.

"Each bathroom was connected to a space with its own personality. We leaned into the unique character of each room to inspire the design for the en-suite bathroom." - The Lynden Lane Co.

We went with Woven Woods in Seashell and Khaki in two separate bathrooms. The Woven Woods brought texture and a natural finish to the spaces.

In addition to Woven Woods, the Lynden Lane Co. used COM, which is available exclusively for our Everhem Trade members. COM allowed for more playful patterned fabrics to compliment the space.

When it was time to choose the window treatments, Everhem and The Lynden Lane Co. exchanged ideas, reviewed fabric options and ultimately landed on very harmonious and beautiful window treatment designs.

Adam, co-founder of Everhem, finds himself drawn to his favorite spot in Malibu, the Getty Villa. Strolling around, taking in the art and architecture while sipping a latte is his ideal Saturday with the family. Adam would let Privacy Lined Bluff live in his office so the natural tones help take him back to when he walks across the travertine stone path, feeling the Malibu breeze cool him off in the beating sunlight.

Dayna, our Director of Strategy and Operations, loves exploring the trails in Malibu when she makes her way up from San Diego for a visit. One of her favorite spots is the Point Dume Cove Trail - getting plenty of fresh air along the cliffside path that overlooks the ocean, followed by the perfect post-hike award, the beautiful Malibu beach. There she loves to relax in the sun and unwind on the weekend with her husband and son. Dayna pictures the Malibu Collection through her kitchen in Unlined Dune. It would allow the golden warmth of the morning sun in while she sips her first cup of coffee for the day transcending her for a moment to those Malibu views and beaches.

Molly’s, who handles all things brand and partnerships, favorite spot in Malibu was almost too hard to pick. From some of the best beaches to Malibu Yogurt, she landed on her favorite Malibu spot, the Summer Somewhere Wines Tasting Room outside of Fred Segal Malibu. Molly finds the Malibu collection lends itself perfectly to nearly every room in her home. She envisions privacy lined Malibu Woven Woods in Bluff for her living room to warm up the space and block the afternoon sun as she pours herself a crisp glass of Summer Somewhere rosé. Does it get much better than that?!

Breana, who handles Everhem socials, finds comfort in exploring and stumbling upon local beaches and hidden Malibu gems. Her favorite spot in Malibu is the Point Dume Nature Reserve. The smells, sounds, and colors of the coastline create the perfect space to reflect, relax, and escape the noise of LA. Breana envisions Privacy Lined Dune in her bedroom as a reminder that home should be a tranquil space and loves the idea of the sunlight shining through creating the magical “golden hour” all day.

Natalie, who handles Everhem socials, is an LA native and feels most at peace when she and a few friends lounge at a local, private quiet Malibu beach. Growing up in the chaos of city life, Natalie chooses to slow down by walking the steps that lead to her favorite spot in Malibu, Lechuza Beach. She loves the idea of Unlined Woven Woods in Bluff, for her kitchen window so she can always feel that same serenity while cooking her favorite meals.

Nina, our Trade Manager, spends her weekends at her favorite spot, the Malibu Country Mart. A sun hat and a pair of comfortable sandals are all she needs to shop, eat, and soak in the Malibu sun. Nina would have Blackout Dune, in her bedroom. She loves the thought of bringing in the natural elements that resemble Malibu beaches to help her rest and unwind after a busy day out and about.

Lisa, our Customer Experience Manager, lives miles away from Malibu, but when she’s in town, she makes her way to her favorite spot, Broad Street Oyster. The famous Lobster Roll is a must have when driving the Pacific Coast Highway. She would have Unlined Bluff all around her dining room to take her back to her favorite Malibu memories!

Introducing An Inside Look of a home close to co-founder, Haley! Haley's sister, Katelyn, invites us in for a peek at her Los Angeles home to show how Everhem transformed her space. The sister duo worked hard to design the perfect window treatments that would bring a light and cozy vibe to Katelyn's home. Katelyn would define her style as "neutral with a sophisticated warmth" and her sister, Haley, would define it as "traditional and polished with a touch of Hollywood Regency". Haley's interior design background and Katelyn's clear vision for the space was all they needed to elevate the spaces their families spend so much time together. Keep reading to see how Haley and Katelyn replaced the heavy black shutters with Everhem!

Katelyn strived to have a functional space that was both beautiful and kid-friendly. She wanted anyone who walked in to feel like this would be the perfect place to cozy up! Haley and Katelyn went with Sheers in Cloud to do just that. "I'm a hopeless romantic, so I'm really jiving on the Sheers lately! I love how it softly filters the light and gives this effervescent vibe." - Katelyn

Haley's favorite part of her sister Katelyn's home is a tie between the living room and the dining table area. To her, they are the heart of the home when their families get together. It's a perfect mix of sophisticated and welcoming for adults to chat and drink while the kids run and play!
