Frequently Asked Questions

Drapery & Hardware FAQs

How and where are your products made?

We source our fabrics from all over the world in search of the finest quality at the best possible price. For drapery and roman shades, we offer a line of 100% linen fabrics as well as two lines of 55% linen/ 45% rayon blended fabrics.

Rayon, though manmade, is actually a natural material made from wood pulp cellulose, and not a synthetic material.

Our woven woods are made from natural reeds, grasses and bamboos.

Our finished products are all handmade right here in sunny Los Angeles at a local workroom and shipped directly to you, wherever you are. Our hardware is made entirely from steel and/or iron and welded and finished locally in Los Angeles.

How many rings will I need?

If you purchase hardware through us, then you needn’t worry. We will provide the correct amount of rings in order for you to properly install your drapery. If, however, you are purchasing hardware separately, we advise that you will need 7 rings for every 54” of fabric width. But 54” of window width is not equivalent to 54” of fabric width. Remember to include stack width, return width and overlap width in your calculation of total width and then take that number and multiply it by 2 to account for the 2x fullness of our panels.

What kinds of drapery hardware do you sell?

We sell three styles of drapery rods in three different finishes along with matching rings.

All of our drapery is designed to work solely with rod and ring hardware. While you can order your own, we highly recommend purchasing our hardware as it is designed to match up with our fabric measurements and be custom fitted to your drapery.

We sell right angle return rods, curved return rods and finial end cap rods and we offer them in matte black, oil rubbed bronze and antique brass finishes. All of our rods are 1” in diameter and our rings are 1 ½” in diameter.

What’s the ideal length and width of a drapery panel?

This is entirely dependent upon the window for which the drapery is being designed.

That said, with respect to length, we strongly recommend mounting your drapes 7–8” minimum above the top of your window frame if you have the room to do so. We also strongly recommend designing your drapery to just kiss the floor as opposed to designing them to hit the floor and create what’s called a “puddle.” Especially for functional drapery that is intended to be opened and closed frequently (which all Everhem drapery products are), a “puddle” would get dirty quickly and often.

It is also worth noting that 100% linen fabrics do tend to grow in length about ½” over time. When you choose a 100% linen fabric however, we automatically take this into account so you needn’t make any measurement deductions.

With respect to drapery width, we only offer drapes in what is called “2x fullness.” This ensures that when your drapery is in the closed position it still looks lush and maintains its folds and structure rather than looking like a flat sheet over a window. We automatically factor fullness into our calculations and your measurements do not need to account for it at all. We also strongly recommend a “stack” width of 8” on each side of the window whenever there is sufficient room for it.

What style drapery do you sell and which should I choose?

We offer our drapery in 3 different pleat styles: reverse pleat, tailored pleat and pinch pleat.

Reverse pleat drapery is stylized in such a way that the actual pleats are on the back side of the drapery creating a structured, columnar look to the fabric in the front. This is the sleekest, most modern looking style we offer.

Tailored pleat drapery is pinched at the very top, making each individual pleat gradually widen from top to bottom. This is somewhat of a transitional pleat style between contemporary and traditional.

Pinch pleats are pinched about 3 inches down from the top of the drape, creating a sideways bow tie look at the top before gradually widening out. This is the most formal looking drape we offer. Still, all of our styles skew more modern and casual than extremely traditional draperies.

Why do I need custom drapery as opposed to standard sized panels?

While everyone’s home, windows and design needs are different, standard sized drapery panels only come in two widths (50” and 100”) and four lengths (84”, 96”, 108” and 120”). For many windows these dimensions will result in drapery panels that look flat when drawn closed, aren’t long enough to kiss the floor or are too long and get dragged all over the floor when the drapes are opened and closed. In addition, the styles available for standard sized panels very often will not match the aesthetic of the customer.

Everhem custom draperies are made for the specific width and length of your window, taking into account your mounting height, proper fullness requirements and the fact that various fabrics grow in length over time. Our company was founded by an interior designer who knows just how vital quality window coverings are to the overall design of a space and so our fabric choices have been carefully curated to ensure that every drape we design using your custom measurements will look bespoke and beautiful in your space and stand the test of time.
