Step 1
Measure from the inside edges of the window frame in 3 places. Sometimes there are slight measurement discrepancies of as much as a quarter to half an inch in different spots along the same window frame.

Make sure your window has enough depth for inside mounting. At least 1" of depth is necessary to properly encase the shade headrail. Click the link at the top right and watch our inside mount measurements tutorial video if you're not sure how to measure window depth.

*Note: For inside mount shades, we take a 1/4" deduction from the narrowest measurement you provide to ensure that your shade will fit inside your window frame. This will be reflected in the final measurements you see at checkout.

If you are trying to achieve total blackout, adding additional width to the sides of your shade (at least an inch per side) can help cover any light seepage gaps.

Step 2
Measure from the inside edges of the window frame in 3 places from top to bottom. Sometimes there are slight measurement discrepancies of as much as a quarter to half an inch in different spots along the same window frame.

If you want your window to appear larger and don't want the shade to cover the window partially when opened, adding additional height to the top of your shade (at least 3.5") and mounting it on the drywall above the window can help achieve this.

Step 3
Blackout lining permits no light to pass through and provides absolute privacy and virtual darkness, which is ideal for bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms. That said, some light will always find a way to seep around the edges of woven wood shades. If total darkness is important to you, then outside mounting may be ideal. If you want to switch your shade mount position, don't worry, you will have an opportunity to do so on the confirmation page. When you change it, you'll automatically be prompted to input new measurements and your other selections will be saved.
